“Cashmere”, officially known as Laurasmadagain, is a sweet 10 year-old Thoroughbred. She stands at 16 hands, and is in search of a new job. I got her from Portland Meadows with the intention of turning her into a polo pony, but I believe that she would be better suited for a different discipline. She is a beautiful mare who has demonstrated athleticism from day one. She didn’t particularly want to run… not because she was unable, but simply because she didn’t understand what everyone was in such a hurry about. There was nothing particularly terrifying to run from, and nothing compelling enough to run towards. Cashmere is content where she is, and she lives in the moment. I first saw her on a hot walker at the track, and when she managed to kick out high enough to connect with the arm of the hot walker, I knew I had to have her. We in the polo world like our women (mares, I mean) to be spirited, and with a little personality to spare.

Cashmere operates under the assumption that everyone is her best friend. She has learned much about boundaries and herd dynamics, but her transition to the public school system was rough at first. It didn’t occur to her that perhaps the alpha mare wouldn’t want to share her bucket of grain. (***MIND BLOWN***) It wasn’t just feeding time either- While the “mean girls" begrudgingly tolerated Cashmere as a member of the herd, any invasion of their personal space warranted a heavy dose of education (er, bullying). Fast forward, and Cashmere has found her place in the herd with her own band of misfits (“the pony”, and the two ancient retired polo ponies).

I was slow to start Cashmere after she came off of the track (no fault of hers), and we have just been training her in earnest over the last year. Cashmere is unflappable. I don’t think she has ever spooked, and if she ever does find something that warrants a good spook, you should trust her that you are in legitimate danger. She is unconcerned about polo mallets or polocrosse racquets swinging around her face, flying or rolling balls, tents, or anything else. While she doesn’t seem particularly “Cowy”, I did make her chase a loose herd of cattle one time. She showed no resistance whatsoever, likely because she might actually believe that she is a cow. She has been ridden out in the open a lot (in slow polo games at several different polo clubs), and has no issue running in a herd, or even making contact with other horses. Given that nothing seems to phase her, she is also brave on trails. She doesn’t bite or kick, with one small exception, which I will explain below.

We have been working with Cashmere on all of the basics. Neck reining, turning, stopping, roll-backs, etc. She goes naturally round and uphill, rides well from the rein and prefers a light contact...
