Meet KC, our charming 14-year-old sorrel Welsh pony gelding, standing at 12.2 hands tall. We've had KC for the past two years, during which he has been a wonderful companion for our beginner riders. My daughter got a step-up horse and the other is not interested in riding. About KC: KC started his journey as a lead line pony. He is more "whoa" than "go," making him the perfect partner for leisurely trail rides at a walk or trot. While my daughter did 4-H classes on him (showmanship, horsemanship, trail and games classes), he won't win any game classes if you’re looking for speed. His next best fit would be a firm but soft rider who prefers a slower pace. He's will lope but needs to be pushed. This is where a more advanced rider could work on him to confidently learn cues. He's not fancy broke, direct rein and kick ride. KC's Highlights: Trail Ready: Loves to follow along on trail rides or be ponied, not spooky. Absolute beginners can ride easily. Beginner-Friendly for trails/Advanced beginner for games, pleasure: He’d best be suited to a rider who can correct his sometimes pony attitude (see notes below), if you plan to take him away from his buddies or if you’re a beginner and you’re interested in games or pleasure classes, you’ll be more successful working with a trainer who can teach you these skills. Experienced: Has attended lessons, 4H clinics, WSCA shows, and a county fair. Trail ridden at county parks and down the road. Comfortable around vehicles. Farrier: Stands decent for the farrier and has had regular trims. Barefoot. Loves Attention: Enjoys being brushed and pampered. Easy to saddle and handle for children. Tack: Rides in a hackamore or broken leverage bit. Pecking Order: Top of pack with 2 other submissive mares. In the past he was pastured with mares where he was more in the middle. Not sure what he’d be like in a mixed herd. Important Notes: Buddy Sour: KC prefers the company of other horses (he is pastured with mares) and may paw at the trailer or in a stall if left alone. This can make him anxious and less responsive, especially with timid riders. Pony Attitude/Bucking: He has bucked in the past when taken away from his horse friends/being kicked too much. He quits if you know how to correct the issue. Health: KC has foundered in the last. He recovered from a bout of fall/winter founder due to insulin resistance and has not been ridden regularly since September 2024. He tested negative for Cushings. He will thrive in a home with limited pasture and low-sugar hay where this can be kept in check along with his weight. Will need updated coggins and vaccinations if your situation requires it (expired April this year). Teeth were floated April 2024. If you're interested in giving KC a home where he can enjoy a relaxed and happy life, please reach out!
