Some horses require a professional standard operating procedure and a written contract before they’ll agree to participate. Joey clearly missed that meeting. Want to spend the weekend exploring the trails? Perfect. Want to take a majestic, movie-like stroll down the beach? He’s already packed his bags. Want to work on your transitions in the arena? He’s down for that, too. At 17.1 hands of pure, gorgeous black-pearl perfection, Joey is built like a fairytale but has the working-class work ethic of a horse who just wants to be helpful. He has a cumulative year of professional training under his belt alongside trail and arena work at home, which means he has the foundation, the steering, and the balance to be a total pleasure to ride without any of that dramatic "young horse" baggage. Joey is a massive people-pleaser. He doesn’t look at a rider and ask, "Why should I?” He looks at you and asks, "Did I do it right? Where is my gold star?" (And by gold star, he means treats. He accepts all major forms of currency, including carrots, apples, and peppermint.) He has happily carried anyone from 2-year-old grandchildren to trainers that push him out of his comfort zone. What makes him truly special is his ground personality. Joey is essentially a 1,800-pound golden retriever. He doesn't just tolerate attention, he craves it. He is incredibly social, and if you stand still long enough he will perform a complete inventory of your person. He is delightfully "lippy" and loves to gently explore your coat zippers, investigate your baseball cap, or figure out exactly how your hair clip works. In the interest of full disclosure, Joey does have one notable feature: he has only had one working eye for his entire life. It has never stopped him from being an absolute good boy, but it does mean he can occasionally be a little slow to get used to new things while he takes a moment to map out his surroundings. This also applies to his experience with livestock. Joey has been introduced to cattle and even went to a sorting practice, but he needs a bit more time and mileage to feel completely comfortable around them running up on his blind side. Once he knows he can trust you to be his co-pilot, he’ll follow you anywhere. If you want a towering, handsome, beach-riding partner who trusts you implicitly and thinks you hang the moon, he’s your guy. Located in Templeton, CA.
