If you’re looking for one that’s actually been used and knows what a day’s work is, here’s your girl.

Approximately later teens and 15–15.1hh, this mare has spent her life earning her keep in feedlots and on cattle ranches. She’s been exposed to about anything you could reasonably expect a ranch horse to encounter and takes life in stride. Since she’s been here, she has not offered to buck, rear, kick, or spook.

She is fancy broke — neck reins, moves off your leg, and has all the buttons you’d expect from a horse that’s spent years working for a living. She’ll also ride bareback in nothing but a halter and lead rope. She’s not buddy sour or barn sour and doesn’t need another horse to hold her hand.

Stands tied, loads and unloads, bathes, clips, and handles like an old hand should.

She came to me needing some groceries and is still gaining. She also has an old hind-leg injury that doesn’t seem to bother her much with what I’ve asked of her, but I’m going to be upfront: her days of hard, heavy ranch work are behind her. She’s already put in those miles and deserves an easier job now.

I think she’d be happiest as a kid’s horse, confidence builder, lesson-type horse, or easy pleasure/trail mount for someone wanting to learn on a horse that already knows far more than they do. I would personally keep her riding lighter rather than sending her back to a life of long, hard days.
