1ST EDITION We could probably sell 1st Edition on his looks alone. Thankfully, we don’t have to. This unique palomino roan gelding is 8 years old an 14.3 hands. He is the kind that makes you stop and look twice, but what really makes us excited about him starts when you put a saddle on him. 1st Edition has a TON of talent and handle. He’ll turn around fast and correct, plant himself in a sliding stop, move off your leg, back up soft, pick up either lead, and ride collected when you ask. He feels educated underneath you—you can feel the difference the minute you pick up the reins. But here’s our favorite part: You can forget about every bit of that and just go ride him. Loosen your reins and head down the road. Take him into the hills. Pick through rocks and brush, cross water, step over logs, ease down a steep bank, or work your way along a narrow trail. 1st Edition watches where he puts his feet and handles country without needing you to micromanage every step. Bring him back to the ranch, give him a job, and he fits right in there too. He’s been used around cattle, gathered, sorted, opened gates, checked fence, and knows what a day of ranch work looks like. He has enough handle to be useful while still being the kind of horse you can relax and enjoy. And we’ve tested his common sense plenty. Flags, tarps, pool noodles, tires, bridges, the bridge, dragging objects, water, dogs, bicycles, cars, big trucks, people making noise and everyday commotion. His answer is usually pretty simple: Okay. Where are we going next? That tells us more about 1st Edition than any sliding stop ever could. He’s gentle, kind and friendly. He likes people and meets you with a willing attitude. He ties, bathes, clips, hauls and stands well for the farrier. He can live in a stall or pasture, ride out alone or go with a group, and he doesn’t need everything done one particular way to have a good day. There’s something special about having this much ability underneath you without feeling like you have to be a professional to enjoy it. A handy rider can pick up the reins and appreciate his buttons and training, while someone who simply wants to relax can loosen the reins and enjoy a really nice horse.
