Sage is our adult beginner lesson horse's eventual successor, but after being told by the vet that she should not in fact be doing advanced lessons in the meantime due to an old injury that we found by accident, she is a bit under-employed. In short: beginner lesson horse temperament, but still gaining the experience she needs to eventually step into those shoes. Just prior to finding out about the old injury, she spent a season absolutely cleaning up at local hunter shows with students. And she can still do that with you...just not over fences anymore. Dressage your thing? We've informed her that now that she doesn't jump anymore she has to learn other frames other than long and low and become a low level dressage schoolmistress too. While we are being very careful about what she does--a beginner lesson horse temperament does not just fall out of the sky so we want to make sure we have her for the long run--she DOES need to be a bit closer to fully employed than she currently is! (Not least to, um, help maintain her girlish figure. Whoever said TBs are hard keepers definitely never met ours.) Therefore we are putting out feelers for a half lease. Half lease means you pay half of the horse's upkeep and get exclusive use of the horse three days a week! We are not one of those places that can afford to charge a couple hundred bucks a month for a half lease because the horses have five half leases each and are still being used for lessons even on the days the lessees are riding. That's not fair to the horse and we won't do it.
