Meet Josie, a very unique Shire/Quarter Horse cross mare, 5 years old. Josie is broke to ride and drive in just about every fashion. She spent the first part of her training at my brother's family farm doing nearly everything you can imagine, from prepping fields for planting to mowing, raking, and baling hay. Since then, I’ve had her in training, focusing on more formal dressage and western riding. Josie is an absolute gem on the trail and truly takes care of her rider. I’m currently going on about three months with a badly broken leg (not riding-related) and am still not cleared by my doctor to ride. However, the videos of me riding her in the snow and bareback are of me essentially riding with only one functional leg, to give you perspective on how manageable and trustworthy she is. Josie has absolutely no buck or bolt in her whatsoever and is safe to ride anywhere. If you’re looking for the type of horse that has a draft-type build with an easy to sit trot, yet is athletic enough to easily become a lower-level dressage horse, she is the perfect fit. Josie is not a deadhead, she definitely has the energy you want if you're aiming for dressage, combined driving, or pleasure driving, but she is calm and patient enough to take excellent care of her rider. As I mentioned, I literally rode her bareback and stirrup-less as soon as I was able to simply sit on a horse and do a sitting trot, long before I was officially cleared to ride. She will ride in a shank and neck rein, moves very nicely off your leg, and will also ride forward into the bridle readily, exactly as you’d want a dressage horse to do. Josie gets along with just about any horse in turnout and is wonderful to have in the barn. I can even lead her around on my crutches with no issues, something I’ve learned many horses are not comfortable with. She has no health issues whatsoever, has excellent feet, and requires no additional maintenance. She is a truly great mare with an excellent career ahead of her.
