Tonka is a 9-year-old Quarter Pony standing a stout 12.2 hands tall. If you’ve ever wanted a true “mini Quarter Horse,” Tonka is exactly that. He is built thick, wide, and strong with plenty of bone, and you would be hard-pressed to find a prettier pony. He has all the looks of a big Quarter Horse packed into a smaller package, along with the athleticism, ability, and work ethic to match. Don’t let his size fool you—Tonka has absolutely no idea how little he is. He is quick, athletic, incredibly smart, and rides much more like a broke horse than your typical pony. He has spent his life having a job and has been ranched on, roped on, ridden countless miles down the trail, and used around cattle. He is the kind that can go all day, keep up with the big horses, and never seems to run out of gas. Whether you’re checking cows, doing ranch work, covering country, or simply spending the day riding trails, Tonka is happy when he has something to do. In the arena, Tonka is exceptionally broke for a pony his size. He rides one-handed, neck reins better than many finished horses, catches both leads, rides collected, has a big stop, and a nice reverse. He is responsive, handy, and quick-footed without being unsafe. He is not a slow, dull pony—he has always had a job, enjoys working, and likes to get things done. One of Tonka’s greatest qualities is how intelligent and trainable he is. Show him something once and he remembers it. He retains his training extremely well and genuinely wants to understand what is being asked of him. Because of that combination of brains, athleticism, and natural ability, we believe Tonka could make an outstanding performance pony in nearly any direction. He would be an exciting prospect for someone wanting to develop a talented pony into a specific discipline. Tonka also has enough quality and presence that we could easily see him stepping into the show world. Whether someone wanted to pursue a Western discipline or take him in an English direction, he has the athleticism, movement, trainability, and mind to be developed into something very special. For all of his ability and forward work ethic, Tonka is absolutely safe. He has zero buck, bite, or bolt and does not get fresh after time off. He is good to be around, picks up his feet, and handles like a gentleman. He simply isn’t the type that wants to poke around without a purpose—he enjoys having a job and thrives with someone who appreciates a smart, willing, athletic pony. Tonka would be an incredible fit for the right rider or family looking for a pony that can truly keep up with Mom and Dad on the ranch or trail, while also having the talent to pursue bigger goals.
