Meet Sherman Klump, an 8-year-old Thoroughbred gelding and a self-proclaimed track washout who apparently missed the memo that Thoroughbreds are supposed to want to go fast.

Sherman went through race training but never made it to his first race—not because of injury, he simply didn't have the drive for racing. Turns out, Sherman is much more interested in being a riding horse than a racehorse.

And honestly? That's pretty fitting for him.

Sherman is a big mover who rides like a couch. He's naturally pretty chill, doesn't tend to get hot, and when something does get him worked up, he comes back down quickly. He's comfortable, sensible, and has always been a really enjoyable horse to ride.

Before my deployment, we had started working on dressage and small jumps with the intention of developing him into a 3-day eventing horse. He has the movement and athleticism to go in that direction, but he's still green enough for someone to continue developing and finish their way.

He's had plenty of experience outside the arena as well. We've done a lot of trail riding around mules, wagons, and all the activity that comes with them. He's also made the long haul from New Mexico to Georgia and is an easy traveler.

Sherman has spent the last 10 months turned out in the pasture while I was deployed, so he's currently out of shape and will need to be brought back into work. I'm not advertising him as a finished or currently legged-up horse. He's a prospect with a good foundation who deserves someone with the time to get him going again.

His registered name is Sherman Klump. I have a copy of his Jockey Club papers, but his registration was never transferred into my name.

He's athletic without being a fire-breathing dragon, has a great big stride, and somehow manages to make a Thoroughbred feel like your favorite living-room furniture.

This is a difficult sale, so the right home matters. I think Sherman would be a really fun horse for someone looking for a sane, comfortable TB to bring along for eventing, dressage, jumping, trails—or a little bit of everything.
