There are good horses, and then there are horses that are truly the TOTAL package. Alvin is one of those horses. Alvin is a gorgeous 5-year-old red roan gelding standing 14.3 hands tall. He sells grade but is out of registered AQHA stock; his breeder simply never sent his papers in. Papers or not, Alvin has the looks, mind, athleticism, and résumé to stand out anywhere he goes. For the last six months, Alvin has been used with us as a true working ranch horse. He has been used to rope and doctor sick cattle, sort, load semis, gather, and handle everyday ranch work. He has also been started on the heel side roping steers in the arena and shows plenty of ability to continue progressing in that direction. He is naturally cowy, athletic, handy, and genuinely enjoys having a job. Before coming to us, Alvin belonged to a teenage girl who used him for playday events. He knows the barrel pattern and, with a tune-up, could easily step back into the playday world. He would also be a blast for someone wanting to team sort, team pen, ranch rodeo, or simply a horse to enjoy the trails on and become your best friend. Alvin is just as impressive in the arena. He has a cute, comfortable walk, trot, and canter, spins and pivots on both haunches, backs willingly in the bridle, collects himself, and rides around beautifully. He is solid and ready to go show in the walk/trot ranch classes, and with some additional fine-tuning, we believe he has all the pieces to be competitive in walk/trot/canter ranch horse and ranch versatility events. On the trail, Alvin is exceptional. He confidently crosses water, handles logs, tarps, rough country, and uneven terrain, and is extremely sure-footed. We have ridden him into town, around traffic, and even around the playground. Very little seems to faze him. He would be a fantastic candidate for parades, Salt Grass Trail Ride-type events, wagon rides, or simply someone wanting a dependable horse to enjoy miles of trails on. We especially love Alvin for a ranching family. He is the kind a rancher’s wife could enjoy, the family could trail ride, and then Dad could saddle when an extra horse is needed for gathering or branding. He has enough sense to be enjoyable and enough athleticism, cow, and handle to still be useful when there is a job to do. For a youth rider with big goals in ranch versatility, he also offers a tremendous foundation with plenty of potential still ahead of him. And then there is his personality. Think, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and you’ll understand how he got his name! Alvin is going to be your best friend. He meets you at the gate, is easy to catch, great for the farrier, loads well, and has shown us no vices. He loves playing with his pasture mates and has a big, goofy personality while remaining respectful and enjoyable to have around. Alvin does have a scar on his right hind leg from a cut he received while here with us. He was wonderful to doctor throughout the entire h
