Looking for that unicorn-sized draft cross partner that’s still light, elegant, and kind?
Meet Poppy, a stunning coming 7 yr old ( currently 6), draft cross mare, standing around 17.2 h (she sticks at 17.2 but she is much bigger in person), with an uphill build and a sweet and kind disposition. She has been the barn favorite, the type of mare you want to ride, with all the flash and chrome that always gets attention. We have known her entire background and has been carefully brought along her whole life so that she continues to be that unicorn for her future person. Poppy has the brain, balance, and temperament we all dream of. She’s spent a full, solid season hunting 2–3 times per week with multiple packs September thru March. Hunts include Blue Ridge, Piedmont, Loudoun Fairfax, and Snickersville.
She is best in a program we have found keeping her in consistent work for fitness as she is still developing and young. Over the past 14 months, she’s been thoughtfully developed in a professional training program — gymnastic and lateral work all summer, building strength and refinement to match her natural talent. Her jump is beautifully correct, with a brave, quiet, and rateable attitude to fences. While hunting she stands perfectly at checks, rates behind other horses, and keeps up to hold big territory requests. She is sure footed and sensible about all things. While young, she is still an amatuers delight to bring along as well has been hunted by multiple juniors. Her youth shows that she will look at things, but not react. Ideally, I see her being with the rider that needs the rare size and has the education to bring her to her fullest potential. When you lay eyes on her soft kind eye, you know you are in the presence of a special girl. She could go in absolutely every direction including a hunting and/or eventing home.

She’s as sweet and personable on the ground as she is under saddle — not marish, great manners, and enjoys attention. This mare truly checks every box: size, quality, temperament, and ability. She has had no soundness issues, loads like a dream and hunts very lightly. She is truly a ladies ride. Crosse creeks, bridges, walks over every ditch, stands at checks, and leads any where.
