We have known this 8 year old cutie pie since she was 4. Penny and her current human aren’t just long-time clients, they are dear friends and it breaks our hearts to post this ad. Due to divorce, Penny is looking for a forever home where she will get all the attention her heart desires. Never has there ever been a sweeter, sillier mare than Penny. She comes running to say hi, greets you with a wet sloppy kiss, and hugs you until you force her to stop. Penny loves grooming and bathing sessions, a necessity when you have such a glorious mane, and will happily stand tied for hours while you braid, and braid, and braid some more. With great cuteness comes great responsibility, however. Responsibility for you, that is, not Penny. Penny, like my friend’s soon to be ex, refuses to be responsible for anything.

A stereotypical Haflinger, when Penny wants to, she will, and heaven forbid you try to use the “n” word with her highness. That’s n for NO mind you. Try to stop Penny when she has her heart set on something and she will use that big beautiful neck to break free from your grasp in an instant, yelling, “Stupid Human! Don’t you know who I am?” as she runs away. Unlike the others of her breed who share this glorious trait, Penny’s bolting is limited to the ground AND it goes away when in consistent work. We know because we worked with Penny to correct this behavior a few years ago and she stopped bolting within a month or so of training.

Part of our previous training included teaching Penny to come on command. Her leading manners still leave a lot to be desired, but at least she comes when called. Her new human will need to be very good at setting expectations and maintaining boundaries. We will happily share our methods with her new person if desired. The rest of her ground etiquette is befit of a lady of her royal stature. She is great for the farrier, vet, and other servants, uh, I mean, care providers. She sprays, ties, bathes, clips, saddles, etc., like a finishing school valedictorian.

Under saddle, Penny is not fancy broke, but is safe and willing. She’s in need of a tune up and is dull and heavy at the moment. Due to the big “D”, my friend does not have the time, nor the money, to send Penny off to boarding school. When at her best, Penny has a solid W/T/C in the arena, crosses obstacles with ease, and rides out on the street with willingness and curiosity. She cares not about traffic, barking dogs, strollers, etc. nor her rider’s shenanigans (because we all know those who have shenaned before, shall shenanAGAIN!)

Penny hops in the trailer, gets along with all horses, and is happy in a stall or pasture. She gets fat on air and is therefore living that low-carb lifestyle. Penny does have a club foot that needs regular hoof care. She is currently barefoot to allow for more regular pedicures.
