After nine years on the racetrack, Rate is discovering that life isn’t about winning races anymore—it’s about building relationships. When he arrived here nearly a year ago, he was anxious, defensive, and only knew the life he’d been taught. Watching him transform into a horse that seeks out people, follows me around, and genuinely enjoys human connection has been incredibly rewarding. Rate is a striking, athletic Thoroughbred with an affectionate personality that continues to blossom every day. He enjoys people, learns quickly, and has a rock solid try. On the ground he’s easy to be around. He stands quietly for grooming, saddling, bathing, the farrier, and veterinary care. He ties well, loads and hauls easily, stands patiently for mounting, and willingly sides over to a fence or mounting block for his rider. Under saddle, Rate is enjoying learning how to stretch and relax after a life of high pressure and restraint. He’s so smart and is giving me his full attention. He is quiet on the trail with another horse and is becoming increasingly steady and responsive in his work. Like many off-track Thoroughbreds, he can still be reactive when fresh, so he is best suited for a confident, experienced rider who appreciates developing a talented horse rather than expecting a finished one. He would make an excellent partner for someone interested in lower-level dressage, trail riding, or simply continuing his education while enjoying the journey together. Rate does have some wear from his long racing career. He has some mild radiographic findings that we are happy to discuss openly with serious buyers. His condition is improving and he is sound. When Rate first came he was cribbing constantly. He was in pain and had developed the habit living at the track for his entire life. Since addressing his nutritional and emotional needs, living outdoors with regular work, turnout, and companionship, that behavior has decreased by approximately 80%. It’s no longer a struggle to keep weight on him and he’s no longer in pain. Rate isn’t looking for someone to simply ride him. He’s looking for someone willing to continue the partnership he has only recently discovered is possible. If you’re the kind of horseperson who values heart, honesty, and the satisfaction of helping a horse become the best version of himself, Rate may be exactly the horse you’ve been waiting for. He’s truly wanting his person and he’s drop dead gorgeous! Professionally restarted after retirement from racing using a relationship-based training program emphasizing relaxation, confidence, and clear communication.
