Frenchman Sakem is a 20-year-old buckskin gelding with a lifetime of experience and a tremendous work ethic. He has done a little bit of everything—competed in barrel racing, led pack strings, packed elk and deer, worked cattle at feedlots, sorted cattle, and been roped off of. He has also been used to lead organized guest rides on the beach and through the redwoods.
Sakem still has a lot of power and a lot of go. He is athletic, forward, extremely hard to tire out, and genuinely enjoys having a job.
He's easy to catch, stands well for the farrier, trailers well, and is generally middle-of-the-herd. He likes to work and has the experience and stamina of a horse that has spent his life being used.
He is NOT a beginner horse. Sakem has always been a horse for a confident, competent, experienced rider. He has more motor than many riders are looking for, and he needs someone who knows how to ride a forward, powerful horse. I would not recommend him for a novice or casual rider.
Sakem does have a foggy eye. He can see out of it, although his vision is reduced on that side. He had the condition when I got him years ago, and it has never prevented him from doing his job.
This is a seasoned, athletic, versatile buckskin with a huge resume. If you're looking for a horse that has actually worked, packed, handled cattle, competed, and seen plenty of country—and you're an experienced rider looking for a horse with some horsepower—Sakem is worth a look.
