Sage is a 2011 branded BLM Mustang gelding from the Sand Springs, Oregon, HMA. Absolutely gorgeous buckskin with dapples nearly year round and lots of mane and tail. He has lovely conformation and a sturdy build. Sage is excellent on trail and has countless trail miles in varied locations, from city streets to the backcountry. He spent years in a busy urban riding environment and is not bothered by cars, trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, or e-bikes. Crosses water like a champ. He goes out alone or in a group and is equally comfortable leading or following. He’s never barn or buddy sour. Sage has the smoothest trot of any horse I’ve ever ridden! You can sit his trot all day, it’s so lovely. Sage is fun and easy to ride in the arena—he walks, trots, canters, stops, backs up, and goes in a loose frame. Sage loads and trailers just fine. He’s very easy to catch, groom, saddle, bridle, and bathe. Sage can be anxious passing through gates and will rush if he feels crowded. (Give him adequate space and he’s fine.) He does have an occasional spook under saddle but it’s minor—a scoot forward or to the side. Like many Mustangs, he doesn’t love strangers but he warms up pretty quickly (cookies help lol). It also takes him time to adjust to new living situations, though he is great with hauling out to new trails and has been hauled around extensively. Sage is very sound with excellent feet, always barefoot though he wears trail boots on our rocky Southern California trails. He is a carrier for PSSM (look it up); although he does not have the disorder, carriers can sometimes exhibit mild symptoms. In Sage, this manifests as occasional “tying up” if he is mismanaged. To prevent this, proper management includes a grass-hay diet; a fat supplement (oil or rice bran); and daily, light to moderate exercise or turnout. If you want an ultra smooth and uncomplicated trail partner who is also fun to ride in the arena, Sage is your guy! Located in Elfin Forest, California.
