If you like slow and steady then Kelso is your guy. He’s definitely not winning any races. He likes to just mosey along on the trail as much as possible.
Kelso is a 3yr old Buckskin Dun Fjord Percheron cross. His dad is a registered Fjord mother is a percheron cross. We bought Kelso straight from the breeder along with some of his siblings and I cannot say enough about the Fjords they are the best cross with a draft ever if you want beginner quality with brains!
Even when I’ve left Kelso sit out in the pasture with time off I have always been able to just saddle him right up and go out down the road. He’s just very quiet and laid back most of the time.
He rides away from home alone fine or out with a group he will lead, follow, or go in the middle. But most of the time he’s in the back because he’s slow and doesn’t care if he’s out front. He will separate away from the other horses out on the trail.
He’s NOT easily fazed. In fact the first time I asked him to cross water most horses hesitate he didn’t he just went. The first time up and down the steep banks he just went. He just has a good brain on him he doesn’t get easily upset by things. He’ll go anywhere out on the trail through creeks, rivers, over logs, up and down steep hills, and over bridges.
We have seen wildlife out on the trail and he doesn’t care. He’s just NOT easily spooked he has a very laid back demeanor about most things. He has good ground manners will stand tied well and good for tacking up. He is good for the Farrier and he loads right in the trailer and backs right out.
He’s fine with traffic he’s been ridden down a major highway with lots of different traffic going by. Kelso does know how to move off of your leg and neck rein, but he’s very lazy about it. If you want him to get quick about anything you probably would need spurs. He’s only 3yrs old but I would say he could work for an advanced beginner because he’s just so quiet it’s just his breed makeup I think that makes him so easy going.
We have ponied other horses off of him. And we use the quad to lead him up from the pasture. He’s also been hobble trained as well. He’s friendly and easy to catch. In fact when I’ve gone out with the quad to lead a different horse up from pasture he’ll follow me to the gate and want to go too. He has a very sweet disposition and he’s pretty easy to get along with. So if you are looking for a laid back lazy safe horse that has beautiful coloring to boot then Kelso is your guy. And he won’t win any races for you but he’s one that you can easily enjoy just a laid back relaxing ride with.
